Heather Shultz, State 4-H Specialist and Coordinator of 4-H Animal Programs reports: The 2009 State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Competition was held Saturday, January 24th at Edgar Rhodes Center, UGA ADS Complex. In the double elimination style quiz bowl, 4-H members learn not only dairy science related subject matter, but the valuable skills of contributing to a group effort, teamwork, learning to learn, critical thinking, planning, organization, cooperating and communicating. Placing first in the Junior Competition was Oconee Co. Those team members were: Austin Daniel, Jared Daniel, Jonathan Fox, Bennett Guthrie, Godfrey Hendrix and Zach Kennedy. In the Junior Team Competition Morgan Co. was second and Wilcox Co. was third.
Placing first in the Senior Competition was Tift Co., Team I. Those team members were: Jack Branch, Austin Dunn, Rachel Harrison, Sarah Harrison, Zach Hughes and Timmy Smith. Tift Co., Team I will have the opportunity to represent Georgia 4-H at the National Contest in Louisville, KY this fall. Rounding out the Senior Quiz Bowl Competition, Oconee Co. placed second and Rockdale Co. placed third.
We appreciate Dr. Bill Graves, Dr. Warren Gilson, all of the University of Georgia Animal and Dairy Science Staff and volunteer that assisted in the facilitation and coordination of this event. We also thank Dr. Froetschel and the UGA Dairy Science Club for preparing a great meal.
