2009 State 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl


The 2009 State 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl Competition was held Saturday, January 10th at Rock Eagle 4-H Center.  39 Junior Teams and 19 Senior Teams competed for top honors. In the double elimination style quiz bowl, 4-H members learn not only equine science related subject matter, but the valuable skills of contributing to a group effort, teamwork, learning to learn, critical thinking, planning, organization, cooperating and communicating.

Placing first in the Junior Competition was Henry Co., Team I.  Those team members were:  Ciara Green, Jennifer Green, Rebekah Ostrom, Kaitlynn Wallace and Isabella Wright. In the Junior Team Competition Oconee Co, Team II was second and Fayette Co., Team I was third.

Placing first in the Senior Competition was Gwinnett Co., Team I.  Those team members were:  Lauren Bailey, Hannah Carruth, Kaitlyn Chandler and Mary Davis.  Gwinnett Co., Team I will have the opportunity to represent Georgia 4-H at the Western National Round-Up in Denver, CO. next January. 

Rounding out the Senior Quiz Bowl Competition, Spalding Co. placed second and Ware Co. placed third. Spalding Co. will have the opportunity to travel to Louisville, KY at the Eastern national 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl Competition this fall.  Ware Co. will have the opportunity to travel to the Southern Regional Horse Championships in Arkansas this summer.

We would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Kari Turner, Dr. Kylee Johnson and all of the Cooperative Extension Staff, University of Georgia, Animal and Dairy Science Staff, Equine Science volunteer supporters and the Horse Advisory Committee Members that assisted in the production of this popular event. Special thanks to Emily Schattler, Program Assistant-Livestock, Lindsey Fodor, State Staff Program Assistant, Kate Wooten, Student Worker-Livestock, Steven Dasher, Amanda Parnell, Josh Eason, Geoffrey Brown, Juanita Fair and Lindsay Hinnant for their assistance during the event.
