Leadership and 4-H Day at the Capitol, Parts I and II

On February 9th, 2009, over 450 4-H youth, leaders and volunteers attended the 8th Annual Leadership and 4-H Day at the Capitol. A smaller group of 4-H Honorees returned on February 25th to be recognized in the Georgia House and Senate.

Leadership Day, sponsored by the Georgia Rural Development Council (GRDC) and the Department of Community Affairs, is an opportunity for leaders from all across Georgia to come together, share best practices and success stories and identify ways to improve leadership efforts in Georgia. The event, held at the Atlanta Freight Depot, is designed to recognize the efforts of leadership programs sponsored by the GRDC including Georgia 4-H, The Fanning Institute’s Community Leadership Program and the Georgia Academy for Economic Development.

Speakers included DCA Commissioner Mike Beatty, State Senator Tommie Williams, Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson, syndicated talk show host Martha Zoller and  former Jasper County 4-H’er, Ms. Jehan El-Jourbagy. Ms. El-Jourbagy has participated in all three of the GRDC’s leadership initiatives and talked about how all of these programs had impacted her life and development as a leader. Clovers Etc…, a group of talented 4-H’ers provided the entertainment.

After Leadership Day concluded 4-H’ers visited the State Capitol where they were photographed with Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle on the north stairs.

On February 25th, Georgia 4-H Honorees returned to the Capitol where both the House and Senate were in session. State 4-H President, Josh Akins of Monroe County addressed the Senate. State 4-H Winners were also honored in both the House and Senate and as other 4-H attendees got a glimpse of the democratic process.

The entire 4-H Honorees were photographed on the north stairs with their hosts for the day, Representative Bob Smith and Senator Johnny Grant.

Georgia 4-H wishes to thank the Georgia Rural Development Council, the Department of Community Affairs and all of the other governmental officials who support our programs.
