James M. “Bucky” Cook Special Projects Coordinator 4-H Foundation

Updated 2/14/08

Bucky Cook is a cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia where he received a BBA in Business Administration in 1977.  Cook enjoyed a successful career in the property/liability insurance industry from his graduation until 1984.  In that year, he left the insurance industry to become involved with the startup of Heavenly Ham.

Starting with one store in Hilton Head South Carolina, Cook working for a small investor group laid the groundwork for what would become the Heavenly Ham system.  In 1985, he partnered with a former executive of the Coca Cola Company, Hutch Hodgson, to acquire the interest of the investor group and commence franchising activities.

During his 18 year career with Paradise Foods, Inc. (the parent company of the Heavenly Ham franchise system) Cook was responsible for product and concept development, operations, distribution, purchasing, and financial management.  As President and COO, he oversaw the daily operations of the entire franchise system.  He was instrumental in building brand awareness and recognition of the Heavenly Ham retail system.  Under his leadership, Entrepreneur Magazine ranked Heavenly Ham # 1 in its category for ten consecutive years. In June 2002, the Heavenly Ham system was sold to a major competitor.

Bucky is extremely active in the Roswell/North Fulton community and with the University of Georgia. He is a past President of The Rotary Club of Roswell.  During his term as president, the Roswell Club was named “Best All Around” and Bucky received the Sheffield Leadership award, recognizing the leading Club President in the District. He is a graduate of Leadership North Fulton and has served on the Board of Directors of the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce. He is active with the Georgia 4-H program, where he is the immediate past Chairman of the Georgia 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees. He is a member of the Georgia Student Educational Fund Board of Trustees, the Cheerleader representative to the UGA Lettermen’s Club, and has held a number of leadership positions at Mt Bethel United Methodist Church.

Especially noteworthy in his list of accomplishments was his 1999 selection by The North Fulton Chamber of Commerce when he was named the Small Business Person of the year and in 2002 he was honored with the Distinguished Alumni award from the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia

Bucky resides in Roswell with his wife Shelley, daughter Sally and son Jack.  He enjoys golf, and coaching the Roswell Jr. Hornet Competition Cheer Squad and the Roswell Jr. Hornet 14 year old travel baseball team.
