| The
Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association
is sponsoring the Georgia 4-H Pumpkin
Growing Contest again this year. The
prizes will be as follows:
1st
Place - $100
2nd Place - $50
3rd Place - $25
The first 50 counties to certify a winner will
receive a Georgia 4-H Pumpkin Contest T-shirt
for the winning 4-H’er. If 50 counties do
not submit entries, the first 50 entries will
receive t-shirts.
Weight verification forms must be received in
Athens by OCTOBER 1st.
Duplicate as needed and
send the weight verification form to me by OCTOBER 1st.
The heaviest pumpkin will then be named and awards
determined.
Each 4-H’er must grow his or her own pumpkin
and have it weighed by their County Extension
Office to be eligible. Pictures will be required
for the top three state awards. Additional photos
may be used for other promotional purposes, so
please make sure to get a photo of your 4-H’er
with their pumpkin.
A
procedural change will allow for the top 3 pumpkins
in each county to compete for the top prizes.
In the past only the top pumpkin from each county
was allowed to compete for top prizes.
Any
variety of pumpkin may be used, but some of the
larger growing types recommended are: Atlantic
Giant, Big Max, Big Moon, Prizewinner, and Connecticut
Field. You will need at least 120 days to grow
the pumpkin to full size. You may refer to the
Growing Tips page
of this site or check the pumpkin production bulletin
for additional information (number MP 325.) Contact
Terry Kelley, Extension Horticulturist, in Tifton
for a copy.
If you would like me to send or fax you printed
copies please let me know. Please contact me with
any suggestions, comments or corrections in regard
to
these instructions.
Please notify me of other pumpkin
Growing Contest opportunities in Georgia, and
I will pass them along.
Please
share any media or newspaper coverage that you
get on the contest. Good luck and call if you
have any questions.
