Birds
“Peace”
Common Name: Pied Ringneck Dove
Scientific Name: Streptopelia risoria
Info: The Ringneck Dove is the most commonly kept dove in captivity and descends from the African Ring Dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea). This bird is about 12" from tail to head. The original wild coloring is quite beautiful as are the other forty (or so!) acknowledged color mutations/combinations. The wild colored bird has brown and gray feathers on the back and wings with a rich rose colored head and breast with a black neck ring.
“Ella” & “Miles”
Common Name: Eastern Screech Owl
Scientific Name: Otus asio
Info: A small owl standing only about eight inches high, the screech owl is identified by its prominent ear tufts and white "eyebrows." It is often mistaken for a baby great horned owl. The screech owl has two color phases, gray and red. Ella is the red phase screech owl while Miles is the gray phase screech owl. Both owls have been injured in the wild and are non-releasable. Ella was attacked by a cat while Miles got hit by a car.

“Buddy”
Common Name: Great Horned Owl
Scientific Name: Bubo virginianus
Info: The largest of the "tufted" owls in North America, the great horned owl's face is dominated by the large tufts or "horns," yellow eyes, and white throat patch. The large feet are feathered to the ends of the toes. Considered by many to be the most voracious of all raptors, the great horned owl feeds on an extremely wide variety of prey. These include waterfowl, rabbits, squirrels, marsh birds, and rodents. Buddy came to us because of a wing injury. He flew into a barbwire fence and his wing could not be completely repaired.

"Mahaya"
Common Name: Red-tailed Hawk
Scientific Name:
Buteo jamaicensis
Info:
A large hawk, usually weighing between two and four pounds, this species shows a great deal of individual variation in color. The adult has a red-colored tail that may or may not have a black terminal bar.
Being a common hawk, red-tailed hawks are found in open areas with scattered elevated perches, including agricultural areas, fields, pasture, parkland, broken woodland, and scrub desert. Red-tailed hawks feed on a wide variety of prey, mostly consisting of mammals. However, they will also take medium-sized birds and reptiles such as lizards and snakes. Mahaya (meaning teacher in Muscogee) is our newest member of the bird crew, joining Rock Eagle staff in June 2006 due to a wing injury from being hit by a car.
