The Georgia 4-H Centennial History Book will include one page of 4-H
history for each of Georgia's 159 counties.
Counties should prepare the county history including text as well as
photographs using the following guidelines.
Guidelines
for Text
Provide a historical
description of 300 words or less on 4-H in the county
Title submission
"YOUR County" with the author or authors listed at the close of the submission
as "Contributed by:"
Submissions
should be 12 point type, double spaced with 1" margins (top, bottom,
left & right side) submitted in WordPerfect or Word format. Do
not add columns or spacing for photographs. Text should be typed with
only paragraph indentions in formatting.
Quoted material
should be cited as such. Use short parenthetical references
in text rather than footnotes for your quoted information. Be sure
to include at the close of your text the full bibliography for your material.
While a portion of it may be listed on your county's historical
page, a full bibliography will be included with the book. Click here for examples
Email your
submission to Jenny Jordan with
"Your County History" as the subject line. Also send a hard copy
to 4-H Centennial History Book, 309 Hoke Smith Annex-UGA, Athens, Georgia
30602. Included with your hard copy will be your photographs.
Guidelines
for Photographs
Include
three to four photographs per county. Black and white or color photograph
submissions are permissable. Glossy photos should be 4 x 6 or 5 x
7. No photos smaller than 3 x 5 can be accepted.
If photos are
one of a kind photos, please make a copy prior to submission. Copies
should be professional reproductions and not copier (such as XEROX)
copies.
Newsclippings
may be submitted but should be photographed using black & white
film and submitted after developing. Color film will not reproduce
the photograph well.
Scanned
and digital photos may be submitted on disk. Scanned and digital
photos have a serious disadvantage to actual photographs for publishing.
If you do send scanned or digital photos, be sure the following criteria
is met:

300 (dots per inch) or higher
4 x 6 or 5
x 7 photos should be scanned at 250% and 8 x 10 at 100%
Photos should
be RGB, CMYK or grayscale mode
File extensions
(type) must be TIFF, JPEG or EPS
Name each
file with the county name and image number (ie YOURcounty1, YOURcounty2,
etc)
Label your
disk with the county name
Label
photos in pencil with your county name (YOUR county) and then numbered
in the order they should appear in the text. If the photo backing
is slick and a pencil will not adhere, use a piece of Scotch brand Magic
tape adhered to the back of the photograph and then mark accordingly.
DO NOT USE INK on the photographs
Photo captions
should be included. Captions should be numbered to correspond with
the photographs and should be thorough and concise. Captions should not
be more than 50 words and should also be typed in 12 point type and submitted
in wordPerferct or Word formats. Interesting details and antedotes
are acceptable captions. Be sure to include who to attribute the
photo to if it is known. This includes the photographer, as well as,
the owner of the photograph. For example,
Matthew Brady photograph, 1964; from Eatonton Messenger.
Additional
photographs to be considered for inclusion in the book (not on the county
page) may be submitted under seperate cover. Please label each photograph
with a selfstick note attached to the back. The note should include the
appropriate caption as well as the credit for the photograph. All
additional photographs will be considered for sections on Georgia 4-H history,
camping and the full color pages.
If you would
like elements cropped out of the photo, use selfsticking note paper
on the back of the photograph to indicate who or what should be cropped
out. Also submit, a photocopy (copier is fine) with the indication of the
croplines.

for use of photographs not in the public domain or property of the Extension
Service. A sample permission form is available (click here). Be sure to keep
